The hallowed grounds of the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial are a place where thousands gather every September to celebrate and honor the lives of IAFF members who have died in the line of duty during the past year. Hundreds more make private pilgrimages throughout the year. To ensure the integrity of the site remains intact for future generations of fire fighters and their families, the IAFF will be putting forth a resolution at the 2014 Convention for reconstructing the entire Memorial site. |
Tornado seasons vary from region to region, but they can touch down anywhere. Already this spring, IAFF members have responded in the aftermath of multiple tornadoes throughout the South Central United States, assisting in the search for survivors and helping to secure areas with significant amounts of tornado-produced debris. |

But, as explained in a 1954 article published in The Press-Gazette (Hillsboro, Ohio), no one knew best when it came to treating the estimated 200,000 Americans diagnosed with a strange ailment called muscular dystrophy. This “very costly disease,” the article explained, baffled researchers, and although the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), founded in 1950, was dedicated to “seeking the cause and a cure for this mysterious and fatal malady,” insufficient research funds kept progress at bay. |

April 7, 2014 — The IAFF will be able to train hundreds more Canadian first responders to respond safely and effectively thanks to a two-year funding extension for the IAFF Haz-Mat and CBRNE Training Initiative announced March 27. The funding extension will allow the IAFF to expand the program into Quebec and other areas of the country that have yet to fully take advantage of the opportunity to receive free Haz-mat and CBRNE response training through the program, which has already trained close to 2,000 fire fighters, police, paramedics and other first responders in more than 200 communities across Canada since 2009. |
