Several people in the metro region have been left homeless after a series of weekend fires, two of which have been deemed suspicious in nature by police.

A house on Goodridge Street in the downtown area of St. John’s went up in flames around 7:00 Saturday night and lasted well into the evening. Three firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion but were treated in hospital and released. The RNC says this fire to be suspicious in nature.

Police say a Saturday fire on Beaumont Street was also suspicious in nature. That fire occurred at about 2:45 a.m., and the residence was abandoned. Damage was minor.

A fire late Saturday afternoon on Third Street in Mount Pearl left two neighbouring houses with moderate damage. There were no injuries but a basement apartment in one of the units was left uninhabitable according to the St. John’s Regional Fire Department. Two pet birds were rescued by firefighters.

Fire early yesterday morning in the 500 block of Empire Avenue gutted the basement apartment and caused smoke damage to the rest of the dwelling. There were no injuries.
