First responders in the capital city say that they ‘fully support’ the RNCA President’s position on compensation for injuries suffered in the line of duty. The St. John’s Fire Fighters Association says they’ve held the same position since the legislation change — that Emergency Responders who are injured in the course of their duties, receive 100 percent of their salary while recovering. They maintain that Emergency Responders are unlike other workers, because they don’t have ‘control of their workplace’. Fire Fighters Association President Doug Cadigan says although legislation states that it is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees have a safe work environment, it’s been proven in the past to be difficult at a fire, accident, shooting or other emergency.
