Doug Cadigan, president of the St. John’s Firefighters’ Association, echoed that sentiment.

“We deal with an unpredictable workplace, and if one of the members of any of these organizations end up getting hurt in the line of duty, because of the workers’ compensation rules, they end up in hard financial straits,” Cadigan said.

“The last thing a worker needs when they’re trying to overcome a physical injury is to worry about financial matters — and not just a small burden of financial matters, a very large burden.”
